Exercise 12

Molding and Casting

For this assignment i decided to make a TARDIS candle. To do that i took a Tardis 3D model from Gossamer and edited it in openSCAD to create the negative of it including a hole for the wick. I printed 4 of these such that later on the removal is easier. I used a 3D printer because it was the fastet and cleanest way to do it. The wax wan be removed much easier from PLA than wood or similar materials. With wood I would have used plastic foil between the wax and the form to provide easier removal. However, this would have influenced the details of the mold. The OpenSCAD file can be found here. Then I taped the 4 parts together and put the wig in it. I used a paper clip to span the wig tight and hold in the center. Afterwards candle wax was melted on a stove (catlized with a blowtorch)and poured in the form with the wick.
