Design and produce something with a digital fabrication process not covered in another assignment. Possibilities include (but are not limited to) composites, textiles,biotechnology, robotics, and cooking.

Introduction

This week we need to do something which is not done before as part of previous assignment. It need to be from composite, textile, biotechnology, robotics, cooking.I selected composite as my topic. My idea is to use waste material like news paper and create strong structure for use in furniture, vehicle, houses etc.

Composite Material

Composite is a material made from two or more different materials that, when combined, are stronger than those individual materials by themselves. I selected waste news paper, thread and glue as the basic material for my composite material. The glue i used is Fevicol (a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) glue). Thread i used is cotton thread used for stitching. I used multiple layers of news paper thread and glue for strength.Lot of trees are cut for producing news paper.After just one day use that material is useless. This is noot good. Single sheet of news paper is not strong so i decided to use sevaral sheets of news paper pressed closely for strength. I used glue to stick the sheets and used thread as the reinforcemnt for additional strength.

Design

This composit materil can be used in many shapes. The basic shape is 3D printed. In this assignment i am making cylinderical shape to supoport weight. Any other shape can be 3D printed and the paper is covered to make the composit materil with differnt shapes. I designed and 3D printed a basic shape of a cylinder with minimum thickness. Making the composite material I used multiple layers of news paper to strengthen it. Applied glue to the news paper and then thread is placed on it vertically and horizontally.

The 3D printed cylinder shape is placed on top of the paper and thread.It is placed at one end of the paper.Then it is rolled to one end and paper and the thread is wrapped into a cylindrical shape.The 3D print gives the shape and it also provide strength to the structure.It wraps all the paper with thread and it is dried.Once all paper is rolled one more time the glue is applied and a color paper is placed on top of it. Glue is applied on top of it. The glue gives a transparent layer on top of the paper.

If we scroll only paper it may not give enough strength. The paper role will prevent a force from the top vertically.But if a force is applied horizontally the structure will bend and then break. The thread provide strength to oppose the horizontal force.The structure with thread will not bent.

The cylindrical structure is made and on top of it a platform is made from wood. On top of the wood platform weight is added.Similar to the cylindrical structure we can make any mold 3D printed. On top of the mold layers of news paper, glue and thread can be added to make reinforced composite structure.
