Week17 : Applications and Implications

The assignment of this week :
● Define the scope of a project.
● Develop a project plan.

● Define the scope of a project

1.What will it do?

My final project focus on the environmental issue about Orchid Island.
I want to make a culture box as my final project. The function of this culture box is reading the tag message from the specific object with NFC(Near Field communication) technology. Then it will plays a unique music/voice about the object. I will also make a silver helmet with a AR(Augmented Reality) cardboard in it. Than I will capture a AR(Augmented Reality) vedio about Kasiboan which located on Orchid Island. Who finally wears the silver helmet and puts the specific object on the culture box. It will sends a message via bluetooth to the carboard to play the AR vedio.

2.Who has done what beforehand?

I searched if there are any similar projects with mine on the internet. I found there is a group in UK making a project which call "Museum in a Box". They cooperate with museum and copied historical artefacts into 3D objects, the box would play the introduction voice while put the objects on it.

● Develop my project plan

3.What materials and components will be required?

I use lots of materials to do my final project, such as PLA for 3D printing, machineable wax and oomoo for molding and casting, Medium Density Fiberboard(MDF) and plywood for making box and AR glasses. Also, I use some electronic components to build my system, such as microcontroller ATmeag328, photocell sensor, bluetooth module, mini mp3 player module, RFID/NFC module, etc. All of these materials will present in the Bill Of Materials which is showed as follow.

4.Where will they come from?

The materials I used to do my final project came from several sources. Some of my materials like PLA, wax, oomoo, etc. were bought from internet. Cloth, Epoxy resin and plywood, etc. were bought from individual shops. The elecrtonic components were bought from electronic shop. But most materials came from fab inventory.

5.How much will it cost?

All of the materials I used to make my final project cast about 106.46 USD. But most of the materials I used came from fab inventory. So I spent actually about 27.52 USD. to make my final project.
According to the answers of No.3~5 questions above, I build the Bill Of Materials shows as follow :

6.What parts and systems will be made?

I will describe the answers in two parts, hardware and software.

● Hardware:

◎ Culture box.
◎ Three Objects.
◎ Silver helmet.
◎ AR glasses.
◎ Circuits board.

● Software:

◎ Central Program for receiving the NFC tag, transmitting commands to cellphone GUI and playing musics and videos.
◎ Cellphone GUI of receiving command from central board, then playing AR videos.

7.What processes will be used?

The processes I will use in my final project are as follow:
● 2D design with Coreldraw : the culture box.
● Laser cutting : the culture box's parts.
● 3D design with Rhino : three objects.
● 3D printing : two of the objects.
● CNC milling : the object's mold and AR glasses parts.
● Molding and casting : one of the objects.
● Composites : silver helmet.
● Electronics design and production : central circuit board "Kasiboan" and photocell sensor.
● Embedded programming : Kasiboan circuit board programing.
● Input device : photocell sensor.
● Output device : DFPlayer, speaker and leds.
● Networking and communications : NFC and bluetooth networking.
● Interface and application programming : Cellphone GUI with APP inventor.

8.What tasks need to be completed?

● Design 3D model of objects and printout.
● Make silver helmet with composites.
● Design, milling and soldering Kasiboan circuit board and photocell sensor.
● Program in processing and interface application development.

9.What questions need to be answered?

● It took me a lot of time of thinking what kind of my project can help Kasiboan. ● How to execute a AR viedo automatic on cellphone while receiving command from central board. ● Definition of software and hardware architecture.

10.What is the schedule?

● Mar 1 ~ Mar 31
   Final project concept forming.
● Apr 10 ~ Apr 12
Take AR video on Orchid Island.
● May 3 ~ May 10
   Make silver helmet with composities.
● May 10 ~ May 17
   Complete Kasiboan circuit board.
● May 24 ~ May 31
3D design and printout of objects.
● May 31 ~ Jun 7
   Complete hardware circuit and testing.
● Jun 7 ~ Jun 14
Complete final project and prpare presentation.

11.How will it be evaluated?

After finishing this project, it will join the science festival during July 8th and 9th in National Taiwan Science Education Center. I hope it will remind people to pay attention about the environmental protection problem. After that, this project will be placed at the Kasiboan Environmental Protection Exhibition Center on Orchid Island.
