Week 2 Computer-aided design
Assignment
Model (raster, vector, 2D, 3D, render, animate, simulate, ...) a possible final project, and post it on your class page
3D modeling with SolidWorks
I have been working with solid work for awhile, it is a good software for engineering design tool with parametric functions. In 3D modeling, you first create an 2D drawing like in any 2D cad system. The add a layer height to this 2D model to form a 3D part.
Many 3D parts can be produced, each is a component of a larger machine. For example, my possible projects can consist of 4 parts shown below:
All the 3D parts can be assembled as shown below to form a complete machine, in my case, a robotic arm.
Soildworks simulation
Solidworks simimalation is another potential tool I can use during development of the robotic arm. It offers a suite of simulation packages to set up virtual real-world environments so you can test your product designs before manufacture. Test against a broad range of parameters during the design process—like durability, static and dynamic response, motion of assembly, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and plastics injection molding—to evaluate design performance and improve quality and safety.
As a automation engineer I have been using Solidworks for a number of years but have no really venture into the simulation option. it will take some times to dive into it.
2D,2.5D design
Vector
QCAD is a program I often use as subsitube to AutoCAD for 2D design. It can be used to produce 2D drawing for laser cutting part. I can use it product or stright flat objects such as cover or linkages. it can also be used to product 2.5D with some smart lase cutting design.
Audio, video
Video editing software is an application program which handles the post-production video editing of digital video sequences on a computer non-linear editing system (NLE). It has replaced traditional flatbed celluloid film editing tools and analogue video tape-to-tape online editing[1] machines.
MS Movie Maker
Windows Movie Maker (codenamed Sundance, formerly known as Windows Live Movie Maker in Windows 7) is video editing software by Microsoft. It is a part of Windows Essentials software suite and offers the ability to create and edit videos as well as to publish them on OneDrive, Facebook, Vimeo, YouTube, and Flickr.
This pis a free software available on my Windows 10 machine and I find it quite inuitive in making quite simple video clips.
Reflection
We live in a 3D world, so the progression from 2D design to 3D design is a natural thing to happen. I find that once tasted the benefit of 3D design tool, it is a bit difficult to go back to the old 2D tool without many of the automated and parametric features.
Inkscape
Inkscape is a professional vector graphics editor for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It's free and open source. Inkscape can convert raster image to vertor image.
First input an raster file as link, go to path and trace bitmap, one option is brightness cutoff. Click Ok and the file is convert to vertor file in SVG(scalable Vector Graphic) format.
