Week 7 – Computer-Controlled Machining

This week assignment is to design and make out something BIG by using special technique method device called CNC machine. There is many nice options to choose but as I need from long time a basket in my room to put things inside , I decide to choose a basket that consists of a base and 4 sides to fix them together as I will show you.

* Designing The Basket :

First of all , we need to design and make a straight detailed plan for the object that we want to make and make sure that our design will fit correctly and consider carefully all dimensions like : corners sizes , holes diameter , thickness , height , length , width … etc .

For this week I will use " Onshape " as I use it many times in weeks before in Kuwait fab lab , and my “ Basket “ will be smoothly designed as I have some good experience in this software.

For the basket I need to design a base that has 4 sides and the base should contains 3 equals spaces to hold each side plate. I will design a plain squared base in the beginning.

After I will start to create the holes on each side of the base that will fit with each plate later and 3 holes will be enough as I think to hold the side plate.

Similarly for the other side of the base and create the same holes exactly.

And continue with the other side for creating the holes.

Then the same step for the last side of the base to create the supported holes.

Now I will extrude the base to make the thickness enough to be printed in CNC machine , and to save more woods from wasting and to save time and effort , I choose to extrude it for 2 cm thickness to the basic base.

 
Now the basic base is ready , and we need just 4 same plates slides to make the “ basket “ and I will extrude it to 15 cm to make sure that each side plate will be fit for the base hole after extruding.

Now we will export each drawing design separately in “ .DXF “ extension prior to convert the extension to “ .FCODE ” as CNC machine read this extension for printing objects.
