02. Computer Aided Design
For 2D designing, a number of softwares are available. I will be using InkScape to design a sticker.
Step 1: Install Inkscape
I downloaded inkscape from https://inkscape.org/en/download/windows/ and installed it on my laptop.
Step 2: Learning Inkscape
After opening Inkscape for the first time, we get a blank page & bunch of different toolbars such as Toolbar, the Tools Control Bar, and the Colour Palette as shown below:
I learnt the basics about Inkscape by following turorials available on internet. I designed the sticker shown below:

Final Sticker design...
For 3D designing, a number of softwares are available. I will be using Solidworks and Rhino.
Step 1: Install Solidworks
Being a FAB LAB 2017 Student, I have access to one-year-license of solidwirks SDK Maker. It is a is a watermarked version of SOLIDWORKS Standard. I downloaded it & installed on my laptop.
Step 2: Learning Solidworks
I decided to start with solidworks tutorials -
Then I set the Units as MMGS & Dimension standard as ANSI for all default templates.
I created new part as shown below.
Then, I followed the tutorial & designed a pressure plate.
I further learned to create 2D drawings from the 3D model, to add isometric view of model in the drawing.
The procedure is very well explained in this tutorial. I recommend everyone ti go through this tutorial.
After this tutorial, I decided to design a PEN HOLDER. So, first I designed three separate parts.
PART-1
PART-2
PART-3
Then I assembled these three parts by matching the parts. I also used circular pattern tool to create similar patterns in my assembly.
