Computer Controlled Machining

Week 7: Assignment

This week's assignment is to make something big using computer controlled machines.

Inspiration

Some Inspiration can be taken from the following links.

  1. Aftab
  2. OpenDesk
  3. Italic Shelf
  4. Curved shelves
  5. Match Table
  6. Minimal waste table

Scale Down Model

After exploring all the above link, I thought of making Match Table. Before actually making the model, just for proof of concept I made a scale down model using Laser Cutter, as shown below:

Download files for Scale down model

  1. Table Top Solid work's file
  2. Table Top .dxf file
  3. Leg 1 Solid work's file
  4. Leg 1 .dxf file
  5. Leg 2 Solid work's file
  6. Leg 2 .dxf file

Procedure to create Actual Model of Match table

  1. First we cleaned the surface of the Wood Router and Mounted 17mm; 8x4 plywood on the bed of the machine.

  2. I scaled up the above prepared model approximately by 10 times, but need to work on the slots on the table top and projections on the legs because, this thickness of the ply used is 17mm whereas, initially it was 5mm. The .DXF file developed is used in ArtCAM for creating the toolpath as discussed below. Mine and my fellow companion Apoorv's design files was cut simuntaniously in the same board with the same cutting parameters.

  3. Design is created using SolidWorks with approximately 2 feets dia. and 1 feet height. Three part files are made i.e. Two feets of the table and a top, keeping the thickness of the plywood in mind (17 mm). All these three parts are assembled to make sure proper assembly of the parts. Part files and assembly of the table can be downloaded below.

Download files for the actual model

    1. Table Top Solid work's file
    2. Table Top .dxf file
    3. Leg 1 Solid work's file
    4. Leg 1 .dxf file
    5. Leg 2 Solid work's file
    6. Leg 2 .dxf file

  4. The origin of the machine was set and tool path created using ArtCAM was given to the machine to cut the components.

Final Product

Strength of the table was amazing. Me and Punneth both stood on that and it was perfectly stable. Just for the reference me and punneth together weigh around 120 kgs.
