Machine Design

Week 11: Assignment

This week's assignment is to develop a machine in group, which was discussed in week 9 and test it by operating manually and afterwards automate it.

Work Distribution

As discussed previously, I started working on designing and fabrication of the machine and Apoorv started working on the electrical aspect of the project. i.e. How motors will be derived, making of PCB board and how gcodes will be dumped to make the motor move accordingly.

Fabrication of Machine

Step 1

I prepared the outer frame for mounting, all the accessories on the machine. I used press fit arrangement to attach walls with the base as shown below. Laser cutting machine is used to make this arrangement.

Step 2

I created a base palte for my machine to move on x-axis and installed a acrylic sheet over it with screw, bolt and spring arrangement. That base plate is made to slide over the telescopic slides. I cut this base plate manually because the board used was out of the scope of laser cutting machine available.

Step 3

I made hub for fixing pulley and created a 3D printed part to fix motor on the base plate.

Step 4

After completing the X axis arrangements, in the similar fashion I started making Y axis. Using nails I mounted a platform on the two projection and over that entire Y axis arrangement is installed, as shown below.

Future Scope

Initially I planned to make 3 axis CNC machine. But, because of design fault and poor selection of material, it was not possible for me to mount third motor. Base was very weak and unstable and since, I have to stick to schedule to complete my machine for review. Therefore, I don't have sufficient time to remake it with required modifications and correction.
In future, after FabAcademy I have plans to complete this machine, with all the three intact axis.
