This is in progress. I'm behind in the previous exercises, so I am prioritizing the Electronics Design and Output Devices exercises this week (as they will contribute to finishing the Machine and Mechanical Design group project). Solomon (FabLab Manager) and I spoke briefly about recycling the existing machinable wax - that we should do this. I wonder where we could do the melting on campus, there must be a suitable workshop. This material circulation is important, not just for material and money reasons, but also our limited storage space. Plus previous projects in a university lab can pile up, and students' work from previous years is not something that needs to be archived. (Except of course those projects that show what can be done, how to do it and perhaps how not to do it.) Will keep this in mind - maybe we can schedule a wax melting block making day in future.
For this week's assignment I will probably do something rather small and easy, as I don't think I need anything cast for my final project. I also don't feel as 'threatened' by this exercise as I do by the complete unfamiliarity of the electronics work. For those exercises I really need a lot of direct teaching and hand-holding. With more 'material-based' exercises I feel a million times more confident to muddle forward on my own.
Notes and reflections to come.
