WEEK 14 Composites

For this week assignment I want to produce a rigid cushion (actually a fake one) for the chair I produced in the week 7 assignment.

I started designing in Rhinoceros the 3D file, from which cut traces were obtained.

I lasercut 3mm paperboard for the mould structure.

And than I built it. Half of designed pieces were enought for a solid structure.

I glued it with hot glue to a paperboard base.

And than I covered it with linen fabric. It is taped to the bottom of the base.

I'm satisfied, the result is quite clean.

I chose some spare fabric pieces to produce the composite. I cutted 6 square pieces with the right dimension to fit the mould.

In order not to have the piece attached to the mould I used a plastic wrapping on the mould.

In the meanwhile I prepared the glue. I didn't want toxic or smelly products so I decided to use vinil glue. I mixed it with water (1/3 glue, 2/3 water).

I dip the fabric in the blend trying to have glue well absorbed through fibers.

I than lay down the fabric on the waterproof mould and flatten it carefully with a brush.

I went on with all 6 layers...

...and put the piece over a fan waiting it to dry up.

Here is an image of the chair completed.
