3d scanning and printing

Niels lecture

Niel went over the materials and differend kind of 3d printing technoligy, he recommended to use PLA with is made from plant materials, he went over that we needed to have eneugh room between the object that we want to print, we should always chech out the tolerence and the material that we are using before printing our design. He talked about some of the materials in the more expensive 3d printers can be copyrighted and when it is copyrighted it is really expensive so we should look at the non copyrigted materials. When you design something inside an object you should always design it with supports that can be taken away after the printing. He talked about never having the objegt filled inside always make a mesh or a honeycomb design in the full bits so you are not wasting both materials and time. Out of the small 3d printers he recommended to use the ultimaker but he went over more brand like Sindoh with is a chinese company thats really good and the work directly with solidworks the Sindih 3d printer is really good for the price you pay for it with is 1000$. He talked about the Form 2 printer that costs around 4000$ and it can print in really high resulution. then we went over some file formats like the STL with can ruin your geomatry and it dosent tell you the size of the file but it´s relly easy to use, PLY is mbuild on STL. OBJ most printer can understand. And he told us not to use DSF because it is bad.

Assignment

We should make and desig a small object that we cauld not cut in the lasercutter.
Try meshmixer than change it from mesh to path in cure if we are using the Ultimaker 2 because it is specially made for the Ultimaker to make the speed and the thickness of the material right for the print.
Second part is to scan and print an object.

Designing and printing an object

I´ve been using many products fro 123d and I like them at the entry level of design programs were I am at moment. I made a box with another box inside that cannot get outside or inside because that the box only has triangle, circle an hexagon shapes on it, to make I started by using the 123d design program and used the primative boxes tool made one box and took the inside out of it then duplicated thebox and joined them on the brim then I made all the shapes that I wanted snapped them to the box and exdruded the away then I made another smaller box inside of it and from there I printed it in the ultimaker 2.
I installed the 123d design and the meshmixer with it, after I designed the box and was going to start to print it meshmixer was not compatible with the ultimaker so I went and got Cura so I could slice it and then try to print it. The print was really nicely, the speed that I chose was normal so wen it finished I decided to try the fast setting on the Ultimaker for that test I got an box from http://www.thingiverse.com/ for my FabISP and set the setting to fast photos below.

w3 The start was to make a primativ box and take the inside out of it.
w3 Then I duplicated it and joined them on the brim.
w3 The next step was to make the shapes that I wanted.
w3 From there I extruded the shapes from the box then made another box and dropped it inside of the bigger box.
w3 This tutorial helped my alot to understanding how to design my object.
w3 The box inside og a box half ready.
w3 It lokked like this when it had finished the printing.
w3 Ready product.
w3 another angle of it.

Scannig and printing

I decided to scan a skull that I found on the Walldrau and then we scanned a whole room here in Walldrau

I started to scan an r2-d2 timer that I have at home with the 123d catch, the scan was okey but not perfedt it had 1/8 og it missing were the light from the window hit it, so I tried again with the r2-d2 with blinds over the windows and the lights turned off then I got nothing of it almost, after this I started to scan the scull that I found the day after.

The scaning of the skull was quite hard I tried many different settings and lightings as well diffrent scanners, I started with the 123d scan with the skull on a turntable and the phone on a fixed location but I only got a straight plane from the scan so I went to the webside and learnd that you have to move the camera around the object your scannig because of the program 123d scan works on taking the object that is in all of the photos and extracting the other object away and than building a 3d image of your object thats left, so after that learnig curve I scanned again the skull with 123d catch on a table but found out that the surface that you are scannig on top of cannot be shiny it will make the scan really bad, so I went after another scan and tried to do it out side in the shadow it worked well but the details were lost, so I brought it back inside scanned it with the xbox kinect girst stationary with the turn table it didnt come out in shape of the skull so I mounted it on a stick and walked around it with the kinect, I got a proper scan but not as the details that i got with the 123d scan so I went back to it but before I went for it again I made alot of refrence points and took 67 photos from all angels and got a good scan after many tries but I learned with every failed scan.

The scaning of the skull

w3 We started out calibrating the kinect and testing it.
w3 This was the test that we made we did a scan of me.
w3 Here is the first setting that I tried to scan the skull but the table had to much glance on it so the scan went really bad.
w3 After that failure I tried to mount the camera and put the skull on a turning table that gave me just a long plane of nothing no 3d image, but there I found out how the program 123b catch works.
w3 From there I went outside in the shadow to try out a scan but came out with really litle details.
w3 I tried the kinect but it was even worse than the outside scan with 123d scan.

Programs and machines used this week

I downloaded these programs here for this week.
123d catch
123d design
Meshmixer
w3 Scanect for the 3d scaning with the kinect
w3 Kinect for windows.
w3 And the Ultimaker machine that I used for printing
