| I decided to incorporate my fiber hobbies into my Final
Project and to do something relatively simply so my project is
achievable while completing Fab Academy and continuing my work as the
Education Program Manager.
I knit and sometimes spin fiber. When I spin I like to use an old fashioned drop spindle. They're easy to make, very portable, and using them can be calming experience.
It is, however, inexact and takes a fair amount of effort to get nice, even yarn from this process. I know other spinners who use traditional fly wheel style spinning wheels, and then some techy spinners who use electric spinning wheels. The electric spinning wheels are table top machines, extremely portable, and because of the degree of control over the electric motor spinning the bobbin the yarn produced is very even and easy to work with. My inspiration pictures and a sketch of my project follow.
