I am doing an interactive facade, of my architecture final project, I wanted to use light transmissive materials, at the beginning I was thinking about optical fiber, but later I realized that engraved acrylic could give me a similar effect.
The leds that are connected to the acrylic will be on or off depending of the movements of the people inside the building, because I am going to use distance sensors to show this movement.
Some of my architecture facade reference are:
I did a estimation of how much my project will cost and where I was going to buy them
My final project will cost 134,58€
To know exactly which are all the components that I am going to need I decided to do a small prototype of my prototype.
Structure and methacrylate: Laser cutter
Frame: 3D printing
Electronics: Sensor board and Led array boards
Laser cutter
3D printing
Milling machine (Roland mill)

- Acrylic_Laser cutter
- Electronics _Rolland Mill MDX_20:
__ 4x LED Array Boars
__4x Slaves
__1x Master Distance Sensor Board
- 3d Printing: the holding pieces
The led array board, the slaves and the master and the networking and the communication between them.
To cut the structure and engrave the acrylic with the laser cutter machine .
To print the final holding pieces.
I have to research more about effect of iluminating the acrylic, I should try to do more engraving than in the first prototype because I want it more translucide. And also try using with more powerful LEDs.
By the end of this week I should have the final design of my led array board and the design of the structure.
And next week I should finish milling and soldering the led array boards and the master and slave boards to test the communication.
Between next week and the following one I have to have also the final structure, the 3d printing pieces and the acrylic and put everything together.
In my final project I should get illuminate the acrylic with the LED array that I am going to put in the borders, and the input should be the distance sensor. So if I get closer the LED array will turn on.
