Soldering

This is the first time I have attempted surface mount soldering. The resistors were smaller than I imagined.
I used a board with copper traces on it to practice.

Procedure

  • Wash the board in the sink.(This removes oils from your hands.)
  • Gather the PCB, solder, soldering iron, and components Turn on the soldering iron.
  • Use tweezers to position your component on the proper pad.
  • Get a little solder on the tip of the soldering iron, and tack down one side of the component.
    Hold the component with tweezers.
  • While holding the solder touch the pad of the PCB with the soldering iron. As the pad heats up, touch the solder to it and the solder should pull itself onto the component causing a good connection.

    Soldering iron and supplies.

    Soldering the first pin down. This will free up one hand. Put solder on the soldering iron and hold the component with a pair of tweezers. Once the component is attached, you can use solder in the second hand.

    Heat the pad! Push the solder into the joint. The solder should pull itself up the component.
