COMPUTER - CONTROLLED CUTTING

WEEK 03

Task:

  • Cut something on the vinylcutter
  • Design, make, and document a parametric press-fit construction kit

Programs:

  • Rhinoceros / Coreldraw

Materials:

  • Corrugated cardbord
  • Vinyl

Machine:

  • Epilog laser
  • Roland GX 24

VINYL CUTTING - PYRAMID SIERPINSKI

The development of this pyramid was drawn in 2D and them pass to 3D for generate the vectorial drawing.

The 3D model was created to choose the correct perspective to cut the void and probe different views.

Vectorial drawing, some edges was offset for maintain a continuous surface and make easier to cut.

Export the design in svg or png

Open terminal in ubuntu

  • Type sudo fab
  • Choose image png and Roland vynil cutter
  •

Next windows

  • Upaload image and set vynil
  • Froce 120
  • Speed  2

Clean the work space  and material

Use transfer tape for transfer the vynil to the place you want. Remove innecesary vynil

Final results

Corrugated Cardboard - HEXAGONAL PATTERS

The development of this items was created to generate three dimensional objects from flat pieces. References snowflake

Rhinoceros commands for create the figure

  • Polyline
  • Trim
  • Offset
  • CrvBoolean

Tests to see fit together each piece with corrugated cardboard of 4mm

Place each part on work space of the epilog laser. 60x30cm and then export it in DWG format

Open CorelDraw

  • Set work space 600mm x 300mm

Select all the objects an rescale it 10x10

crtrl + P : Select epilog engraver and then preferences

Change parameters

Corrugated Cardboard  : speed 37 / power 98 / freq 500

Make sure the corrugate carboard is placed correctly in the epilog laser work space

Push reset and then GO

Corrugated Cardboard - HEXAGON RECONFIGURED PATTERS

In fact I wanted to make an dodecahedron, but I made several attempts to folding carton surfaces,

I went the worn way because finally I used each pieces incorrectly.

Well I decided to make pieces that fit, because the union of edges required more study.

Decompose hexagon to fit pieces randomly.

Tests to see fit together each piece

The randomly union of parts forming a dodecahedron

Sculpture - Formed by random sequences

Learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate and describe 2D modelling processes
  • Identify and explain processes involved in using the machine
  • Develop, evaluate and construct the final prototype

Have you

  • Explained how you drew you files
  • Shown how you made your press-fit kit
  • Eaten fresh vegetables today
  • Included your design files and photos of your finished project
